What is 888?

In the last decade, the demand for 1-800 numbers has increased 10 fold. The explosion of pagers, personal 800 numbers, the poularity of vanity numbers and the portability of 800 numbers have all contributed to the depletion of 800 numbers. Toll-free numbers have become such indespensible tools that the Industry Numbering Committee (INC) predicts all 7.6 million 800 numbers are likely to be assigned or in use by spring 1996.

So, the INC had to develop a contingency plan to deal with the dwindling stock of 800 numbers. 888 became the answer - it's easy to remember and was readily available. And if we run out again, the service access codes 877, 866, 855, 844, 833, 822 have been reserved for future use.
