Symptoms

System reboots shortly into the process of loading drivers.

Hardware

Motherboard with 486SLC running at 40MHz.

Problem

The 486slc is incapable of running in protected mode reliably at 40 MHz.

Procedure

Clock your system down to 33 MHz.
