An On-line Tour of State DOTs

An ITS Online Exclusive!

In the past year more and more state Departments of Transportation have discovered the Internet, and many state DOTs now host their own web or gopher sites. Just how useful are these sites? What information, especially ITS-related information, can you find online? Are these sites making full use of the capabilities of the Internet? Those are the questions ITS Online set out to answer in its on-line tour.

We periodically visit each state DOT site we can locate on the Internet, in an alphabetical sequence. For each site we visit, we rank the site in terms of overall effectiveness, and highlight the site's notable features and interesting or unusual content.

Our ranking system ranges from zero to four "thumbs up," and is based on a combination of the following factors:

We rank each site, based on a combination of the above criteria, as follows:

Minimal information is online -- not much here

A good start -- may be under heavy construction

An excellent site -- contains a lot of good stuff

A superior site -- one of the best

We also use a half thumbs-up to indicate rankings that are between the general levels described above.

Of course, the Internet and World-Wide Web are extremely dynamic, and new information is coming online all the time. We update these site reviews periodically. We encourage the DOTs to let us (and our readers) know when they make major additions or enhancements to their sites, by posting "What's New" on their own web sites. (Click here for the posting form.) We also encourage state DOT representatives -- and our readers in general -- to let us know if they feel that specific rankings are too low (or too high), by sending email to itsol@io.com. Be sure to be specific with your comments, and we will re-evaluate the site ranking based on your input.
