More Great Places to Explore

Here are some more great places to hike and backpack in Northern California. The list keeps growing on Northern California Backcountry Pages. More places will be added each month including Henry Coe State Park, "Skyline to the Sea Trail" crossing the Santa Cruz Mountians and the Caribou Wilderness (located near Lassen National Park).

Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) - Here are 10 photographs and a brief write up on each picture. These photographs were taken from Tuolumne Meadows (Yosemite) to 115 miles north near Ebbett's Pass. This is part of a larger 225 mile, month-long trek across the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Lake Tahoe with more photos to follow. There are numerous, smaller hikes to enjoy along sections of the PCT and many branches off the main trail. In fact, I can't wait to return to explore some of those deep and distant canyons beyond the immediate reach of the PCT.

I would like to write more about this trip later. For now, check with the wilderness area's Forest Service office listed below. The Emigrant, Carson-Iceberg, Mokelumne, Desolation and Granite Chief wilderness areas all encompass the PCT from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe. It's definitely a fun, accessible trail (more than most trails) for anyone with will-power. We saw folks of all ages. It takes planning and perserverence, and most important, it takes time. It also takes "timing" such as waiting for the snow pack to melt away usually by mid-summer. Enjoy.

Henry Coe State Park - This is Northern California's largest state park and well within the reach of the San Francisco Bay Area. Yet it is world's apart from it, a tucked away hinterland reminiscent of rural California teeming with wildlife in the clear silence of the morning.
