Electricity:

Power is supplied by La Plata Electric Association, Inc. (LPEA), a rural electric distribution cooperative with main offices in Bodo Industrial Park south of Durango. LPEA is a nonprofit organization totally owned by the membership of customers served and any margins generated from billings will be returned in cash at some time in the future. LPEA provides electricity to approximately 26,000 consumers in rural southwest Colorado which includes all of La Plata and Archuleta counties, and portions of Hinsdale, Mineral and San Juan counties. The Association is an innovator in rural economic development with a work force of 107 full time employees. LPEA had a 1993 payroll of $4,022,093 and assets over $92 million. As a distribution system, the REA owns 2,430 miles of line and 24 substations. Service in 1993 created $37,988,438 in revenues. Wholesale power is purchased through Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc. located in Denver, Colorado. Tri-State supplies power to most areas in Colorado outside of the Denver area. Ample supplies of power are available at very attractive rates. Information on exact power requirements and power location should be obtained directly from La Plata Electric Association. All inquiries regarding commercial power needs should be made at the time one is looking at real estate in the La Plata County and Durango areas.

Water:

The city of Durango has an adequate water collection and treatment system with a 13.0-million-gallons-per-day treatment plant and five storage reservoirs with a combined capacity of 10.9 million gallons. Water is collected from high in the San Juan Mountains on the Florida River watershed. Water also is pumped from the Animas River during peak usage periods to the treatment plant for processing and distribution throughout the Durango area.

In addition to the city system, two water districts which purchase water from the city and distribute it to users along the Animas Valley north of Durango and south of Durango are available.

Fees and charges for both commercial and residential use for the city system are shown on the following pages. In addition to the monthly charge for water (based on quantity of use), there is an initial capital or plant investment fee required of new construction.

For service outside the city, contact the Animas Water Company for areas north of Durango or the South Durango Water District for areas south and west of Durango.
For more information on water - check out Water Information Program

Sewer:

Durango has a modern wastewater treatment plant located south of town. The plant is designed to treat 3 million gallons per day (mgd). In 1989 the average flow treated was 1.9 mgd. Trunk lines serve the city and areas to the south of Durango (including Bodo Industrial Park). In addition, a sanitation district west of the city is served by the city's wastewater treatment facility. Current rates and plant investment fees are shown on the following pages.

Sanitation:

Commercial refuse collection service is provided in Durango by Waste Management, Inc. and by the city of Durango. The city provides residential refuse collection and operates a voluntary curbside recycling collection effort. The city of Durango and La Plata County have established three collection sites for deposit of refuse. Waste Management Inc., has been contracted to collect refuse at these sites for transport to the landfill near Farmingtion, NM. Refuse collection rates are shown on the following pages.
