Electricity:
Power is supplied by La Plata Electric Association, Inc. (LPEA), a rural electric distribution cooperative with main offices in Bodo Industrial Park south of Durango. LPEA is a nonprofit organization totally owned by the membership of customers served and any margins generated from billings will be returned in cash at some time in the future. LPEA provides electricity to approximately 26,000 consumers in rural southwest Colorado which includes all of La Plata and Archuleta counties, and portions of Hinsdale, Mineral and San Juan counties. The Association is an innovator in rural economic development with a work force of 107 full time employees. LPEA had a 1993 payroll of $4,022,093 and assets over $92 million. As a distribution system, the REA owns 2,430 miles of line and 24 substations. Service in 1993 created $37,988,438 in revenues. Wholesale power is purchased through Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc. located in Denver, Colorado. Tri-State supplies power to most areas in Colorado outside of the Denver area. Ample supplies of power are available at very attractive rates. Information on exact power requirements and power location should be obtained directly from La Plata Electric Association. All inquiries regarding commercial power needs should be made at the time one is looking at real estate in the La Plata County and Durango areas.

Water also is pumped from the Animas River during peak usage periods to the treatment plant for processing and distribution throughout the Durango area.
In addition to the city system, two water districts which purchase water from the city and distribute it to users along the Animas Valley north of Durango and south of Durango are available.
Fees and charges for both commercial and residential use for the city system are shown on the following pages. In addition to the monthly charge for water (based on quantity of use), there is an initial capital or plant investment fee required of new construction.
