Guinness International Cartoon Festival

The Cartoon Festival is an annual event.

Saturday 31st May -2nd June

Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow, Ireland.

Welcome once again to the Guinness International Cartoon Festival. This is our 6th Festival and we hope one of our best. Each year we learn a little more and try a little harder. In particular for 1997 we hope to fill the streets with music ... and the Marquees with Cartoonists for we have found that there is a genuine interest from both visiting cartoonists and the public to meet those cartoonists whose work is being exhibited in the Main Exhibition. To facilitate this workshops have been set up in the Marquee behind the Cartoon Inn. Each afternoon at 1.30 there will be several cartoonists in attendance and you may bring in your work for critical appraisal and advice or you may simply chose to watch and listen to the chat. There is also an opportunity for the children who may yet be inspired by the wit and humour of the cartoonists who lead each session at 4.OOpm - showing the kids, line by line, how to create a cartoon and giving each one a chance to try for themselves.

At three o'clock each day there will be a talk or slide show on some aspect of cartooning, past or present, listed in the programme over-leaf and the 5 o'clock lectures each deal with a different topic. Last year the presence of U Win Nag from Burma was a great focus of admiration and this year we develop the theme of the role that cartoons can play putting over a message to reach a wide audience across boundaries of culture literacy and language by inviting Khalid, son of Naji el-Ah who was assassinated for depicting the oppression of the Palestinians under Israeli occupation and Larry Feign who was 'let go' from his job of drawing Lily Wong in the South China Morning Post. On Sunday there will be a panel discussion at 5o'clock on How to get Published and on Monday Carol Bennett will tell the story of Fanny, a directory of women cartoonists which grew out of the publication of a womens' comic against war published around the time of the Gulf War.

You can also be sure of meeting the Cartoonists in the Main Marquee where there will be live cartooning shows and caricaturing each afternoon.

This year there will be over 40 cartoonists from 4 Continents including America and Australia and 13 Countries Holland, France, East Germany, Luxembourg, England and of course some of the best Irish cartoonists. Many different genres of cartooning are included - Gag cartoons, the one off jokes, political caricatures, comic strips etc. The standard of work is extremely high and hopefully you will find something to interest you and make you laugh!
