Harlequin Standard ML Programming competition

Harlequin announced the start of an open competition for Standard ML Programming with the aim of discovering some of the best examples of the power, elegance, and usefulness of ML as a language for commercial application development. Harlequin will publish and distribute these examples to help promote the use of SML as a programming language in industry and commerce.

A panel of experts including a well-known author will judge the competition, and the winners will be those judged to be the best examples from the entries submitted. We will publish the winning entries on our Web site in the form of a cookbook, with full source and recognition of the author. All entries must be placed into the public domain by the submitting author.

All entries should be submitted to us by 15:00 GMT on 30 November 1997. The results and winners will be announced by a message posted on 30 December 1997 to the comp.lang.ml newsgroup.

The prizes will be:

Rules:

  1. Please send SML Code examples as email text files.
  2. Please include contact details and explanatory description.
  3. Each entry must be no more than 5000 lines of STANDARD ML.
  4. Up to 3 entries may be sent from each contestant.
  5. By entering the contest, the contestant transfers copyright in all submissions to the public domain.
  6. Moral rights will be acknowledged in all published examples.
  7. The decisions of the panel are final.
  8. Harlequin employees are not permitted to enter the competition.
  9. Harlequin reserves the right to declare the competition void in the event of insufficient submissions or if, in the opinions of the judges, suitable quality standards are not achieved.
