Deer Hunter is the most difficult review for several reasons.
  • 1. Why was this game ever made?
  • 2. Why was it such a big hit on the PC? (in the US.)
  • 3. Why oh why did MacSoft feel they needed to port it to the Mac?
  • I honestly have no answer to any of these questions. It is has to be the least obvious port ever to the Mac. The appeal of this game has got to be limited at best, and minimal at worst. But then again people actually play games like Trophy Bass and other odd sports simulators. Presumably hunters and fishermen buy these games in order to practice during the off-season. I have never hunted anything bigger than wild pigeons, but I have shot many a gun and am a pretty good shot. (NRA certified Sharpshooter) I have taught Riflery and Archery at summer camp, but none of this helps me explain the point of this game.

    Hunting season all year round..

Deer Hunter: Interactive Hunting Experience, has got to be the dullest game ever created for any platform. The point of this game is to track and shoot big game in one of two locations. You can use a rifle, shotgun or a bow to kill your prey. There is a practice area so you can practice your aim, with any of the weapons featured. There is a constant chatter from a coach who compliments or criticizes your aim. Of course being on a computer there is no feedback from the weapon. There is no feel for the kick of the rifle or shotgun nor is there the feeling of release when the arrows leaves the bow. There are three locations to hunt Indiana Winter, Arkansas Autumn and Colorado Alpine Meadows.

Use your shotgun, just like in doom

The only realism in this game is the long wait for an animal to come into your sights. You can help yourself with the aid of a call and musk. There is also a choice of using a stand to sit on and camouflage. If the rifle scope is not enough for you, there are binoculars to help you spot prey. This is actually the entire game. When and if you hit anything it is recorded in a Trophy Room, with the head of an animal and a description. Also featured is a map to aide you in tracking your target, with it you can search for signs of "deer traffic."

The graphics are basic, the sounds are lame and the game is boring. Deer Hunter has to be the most pointless computer game ever to come to the Mac. The really scary thing is that there is a new version called Rocky Mountain Trophy Hunter, with even more locations to shoot virtual game.

Because the game is so basic and simple the requirements are pretty low. PowerMac, OS 7.1, 16 RAM, color monitor and 80 MHz or faster. The simple requirements probably the main factor in the fact that there are no obvious bugs in the game. The game is easy to play but hard to master.

MacSoft must have lost their collective minds in porting this to the Mac. No one is perfect. Unreal, Total Annihilation I can see, but Deer Hunter? Come on guys how about a port of MechCommander or a decent Football (Soccer) Manager Game? The only reason I gave this game a 3 is that it is so daft itās funny.

Save your money buy more RAM for your Mac and get Unreal or if strategy is your bag save your money for Starcraft or the awesome Myth II.
