This work studies two late-medieval texts, the Swabian Chronicle and the Imperial Chronicle of Gmünd, which were bound together in a richly illustrated edition by the Ulm printer, Konrad Dinckmut, in 1485/86 (HC 10116-10118). The first section of Graf´s studies analyzes the publication history and reception of this incunable double-work as a whole. The second section examines the Swabian Chronicle, written between 1460 and 1485 by an unknown author who styled himself Thomas Lirer. The third section concerns itself with the Imperial Chronicle of (Schwäbisch) Gmünd, a work of which we also have many manuscript copies. This was a sketch in German of the history of the Holy Roman Empire, but because this text in its early printed version contained supplementary material on the history of Württemberg, a fourth section considers these additions as the beginnings of a formal historiography concerning the territory of Württemberg.

This contribution to our understanding of late-medieval historiography attempts to combine historical and literary methods to unlock the pragmatics of late-medieval story-histories, caught as they were in a tension between history and fiction. The book´s theoretical basis, a concept of discourse explained in the introduction, rests on anglo-saxon analytic philosopy (esp. Ryle and Wittgenstein).
