For whom? Remember, this is the workplace for thousands of people
nationwide. The safer the yards can be made, the better it is for the
Railroad, its employees, the stockholders and, ultimately, the railfans.

Two days ago, for example, one of our crews got on their train, a 14,000 ton westbound grain train. The train was slipping and sliding due to the ground blizzard going on at the time. The dispatcher called them and informed them that there might be a suspected murderer on board, as the local police traced his tracks from the murder site to their train, where the tracks ended.

So what happened? The train was stopped and had to be shoved to be started,
costing the railroad money in lost time and for an extra crew, and the suspect was not found.

While we were on a set of units that had to be ballooned, we stumbled across a
bum who was in our second unit. With a murder suspect on the loose, we backed right off and turned this smelly old guy in to the special agents. I'm sure that he thought that we were a bunch of bastards for turning him in, but our welfare came first.

It can be dangerous for the uninitated, but so is a steel plant, a gravel pit or a truck dock. I mention this to let you know that there are reasons for the railroad's being suspicious. We are fortunate that
we have very little problem with railcars and containers being broken into, another costly problem. We leave that to Chicago, Denver and LA.

First of all thanks to Rick Steele for the good story!

I think that when there is a known killer on the loose on the railroad system, that most tramps don't really blame the authorities for clamping down with extra security.

Not that I am in a possition to speak for them or anything.

In december 12th a rail road worker was stabed, hit with a hammer
and robbed in salt lake.

My guess is that anyone on or near the property for the next month or so is going to get a extra rough time from the special agents. But I don't think that rail fans or tramps will blame the railroads for this. Its a logical reaction to whats going on in their environment.
