The Report of the British Columbia Claims Task Force

This is the final report of the British Columbia Claims Task Force which was created on December 3, 1990 by the Governments of Canada and British Columbia, and the First Nations of British Columbia to recommend how the three parties could begin negotiations and what the negotiations should include. The report includes historical background information on land claims in British Columbia and 19 recommendations on the scope and process of treaty negotiations, interim measures, public information and education. Among the key recommendations of the task force were the creation of the B.C. Treaty Commission, and the establishment of a 6-stage negotiation process.

This is a video record of the public forum on treaty-making in B.C. held in Vancouver on Dec.15, 1994 and sponsored by the Tri-partite Public Education Committee. During the forum, four panellists -- Linda Jolson, Provincial Treaty Negotiator; Robin Dodson, Chief Federal Treaty Negotiator; Barbara Fisher, Acting Chief Commissioner, B.C. Treaty Commission; and Chief Joe Mathias (t'echuxanm) of the First Nations Summit -- answered questions about treaty negotiations from four other panellists and members of the audience. The panellists asking questions were Corinne Lonsdale, Mayor, District of Squamish; Stewart Bell, reporter, Vancouver Sun; Vina Starr, Haisla lawyer; and Dennis Brown, First Vice President, United Fishermen's and Allied Workers' Union. The video includes an interview with political science Professor Paul Tennant of the University of British Columbia in which he provides an overview of the history of the relationship between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people in B.C.
