Presidential candidates need to address immigration
by Bill Barnwell
So far in this presidential campaign we have heard a lot of warm and fuzzy
slogans like "Compassionate Conservatism," "Reinventing Government," and
"A reformer with results," but we have still to hear many important issues
that effect this country brought up for debate.
One pressing issue that every candidate should be forced to address is
immigration. The Democrats are well known supporters of mass immigration
and protecting illegal aliens. The Republicans on the other hand are to
cowardly to address the issue for fear of being "divisive" or driving away
minority voters. However, a Sept. 1999 Pew Research poll showed 72
percent of Americans strongly favored new restrictions on immigration.
Instead of addressing the concerns of the majority of Americans, the
Republicans have decided to pander to a loud and vocal pro-immigration
minority along with the Democrats.
There has been only one major Presidential hopeful who has brought up the
issue of immigration reform and that is Reform Party candidate Patrick J.
Buchanan. In a brilliant speech ignored by the establishment press, Mr.
Buchanan addressed the very real immigration crisis and offered a detailed
plan of reform.
Buchanan commented that, "Like all of you, I am awed by the achievements
of many recent immigrants....The contributions that immigrants make in
small businesses and hard work in tough jobs that don't pay well merits our
admiration and deepest respect. And, many new immigrants show a visible
love of this country and an appreciation of freedom that makes you proud to
be an American."
However, Buchanan warned, "We also see the troubling signs of a national
turning away from the idea that we are one people, and the emergence of a
radically different idea, that we are separate ethnic nations within a nation...If
America continues on its present course, it could rapidly become a country
with no common language, no common culture, no common memory and no
common identity...Regrettably, a cultural Marxism called political
correctness is taking root that makes it impossible to discuss immigration in
any but the most glowing terms."
While the liberal elite chant the phrase "Celebrate Diversity" in unison, most
Americans of all ethnic groups are not taking part in the festivities. Self-
segregation can be seen in our neighborhoods, our schools and our
churches. Racist and ethnic hostilities are raging across America. Slowly
but surely, America is balkanizing and if we don't get the melting pot working
again we could very easily become another Yugoslavia.
Since the Immigration Act of 1965, 30 million immigrants have came to the
US and many have failed to assimilate. Liberals have captured cultural
institutions and have labeled America a hostile imperialist land that was
founded on racism and genocide. Since this time, crime has massively
increased, social services have been bloated, and a new hostile ethnic
militancy has become prevalent in the United States. Another problem with
our current immigration system is that it ignores education or vocational
skills.
As a result one-forth of all immigrants receive welfare and immigrants are
less likely to receive a high school diploma than a native born American,
according to "The Economic Consequences of Immigration" published in the
National Academy of Sciences Report.
Businesses also frequently hire immigrants who will work for lower pay so
they don't have to pay skilled workers prevailing wages and in many
professions wages have been considerably depressed.
Another very alarming example of what high immigration levels and no
assimilation can do can be seen in the city of El Ceznio, Texas. Just last
year El Ceznio made Spanish the official language of the town and ordered
that all business be done in Spanish and that all documents be written in
Spanish. The city of El Ceznio has practically seceded from the United
States and its Governor George W. Bush refused to take action and does his
best to avoid the issue on the campaign trail. Perhaps Mr. Bush's loyalty to
the hispanic voting block is greater than his loyalty to the security of the
United States.
Clearly immigration reform is needed in the United States. Buchanan's
speech outlined several key points to reform. First, America must halt all
illegal immigration. There is an estimated 10 million illegal immigrants in the
United States and they do not deserve amnesty or government programs for
illegally coming into the country. Border patrol must be increased and
strengthened and all illegal immigrants should be sent back to their country
at once.
Secondly, the United States should listen to listen to the vast majority of
Americans and reduce immigration levels. Buchanan proposes returning to
traditional 20th century levels of roughly 300,000 immigrants a year and
these immigrants should be chosen based on their job qualifications,
education, and whether they have relatives living in the United States. This
300,000 number would still be higher than any other country in the world.
Thirdly, there needs to be a national campaign of assimilation. English
should become the countries official language and states like Texas should
crack down on any cities like El Ceznio. All children must learn American
history and know our heritage and traditions. We must reach Martin Luther
King's dream where we will judge people by the content of their character
and not by the color of their skin. We all must become proud to be
Americans. A house divided cannot stand. United we stand and divided we
fall.
I congratulate Patrick Buchanan for being the only candidate talking about
real reform. I only hope the other candidates follow his lead and show
America where they really stand on issues like immigration. America
deserves to know where the candidates stand and what their vision is.
Because in the long run, it is you and I, who is loosing and ultimately, all of
America looses.
