BUCHANAN DISQUALIFIED FROM REFORM PARTY
BALLOT; EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPRIMANDS TWO
PARTY OFFICERS
DALLAS--Pat Buchanan, Reform Party candidate for
President, was today disqualified from participating in the mail-
in primary currently being conducted by the party prior to their
national convention August 10-13. At an in-person meeting of
the National Executive Committee of the party, those present
voted unanimously to remove Buchanan from the process, due
to evidence presented that he had submitted a list of some
500,000 names of prior campaign donors in violation of the
party's primary process rules.
The disqualification of Buchanan leaves candidate John Hagelin
as the only candidate in the party's primary.
Citing not only what party Secretary Jim Mangia called the
"corruption of one of the most important experiments in third-
party democracy by loading the ballot mailing list with old
donors, but also the refusal of the Buchanan campaign to
provide source data for this list once the allegations had been
made, and their refusal to recognize the right of the party's
Presidential Nominating Committee to investigate the
allegations, the Executive Committee resolution stated that, in
essence, "Pat Buchanan has disqualified himself."
In their discussion of the action, Executive Committee
members concurred with one another that these actions and
the Buchanan campaign's "total disregard" for fair process had
"violated the first principle of Reform...maintaining the highest
moral and ethical standards."
In other action today, the Executive Committee voted to
reprimand Acting Chairman Gerry Moan and Acting Treasurer
Tom McLaughlin for interfering in the Presidential Nominating
Committee process "for political purposes."
