Dear Brigade,

I love Gary's story "The Navigator" -- see below!
FTC-Linda

PS -- As Pat Buchanan has joked many times, the GOP and
Dems will finish their conventions and find that the "old troll" is
still waiting for them under the bridge!

Dear Linda: While fighting the Wrecking Crew member, Sandy
Madison of Texas, I sent her a message that others who saw
it, wrote to me saying how much they liked it. Sandy called us
Buchananites, buchananeers (pirates). So I wrote her the
letter that's attached to this e-mail. Everyone seems to like it,
so I thought you might post to the Brigade. I hope you like it.

It turns out that I sold my sailboat to my cousin who lives in
New Jersey and has a slip for it in the Delaware River. We
moved the boat to Jersey last week. The story was inspired by
Sandy's comments and the fact that I was moving the boat to
Jersey in a few weeks. My boat is named the Yankee Spirit
and was manufactured in Washington State by Bayliner. Its
model name is Buccaneer. Believe it or not, it's a true story,
well mostly anyway. The story is called "The Navigator"

The Navigator
by Gary Grella

(Imagine the words below in the voice of Wallace Beary in
"Long John Silver")

Aye matie, it's right good see-n yee. Lassie, i be one what's
called a ole salt. Me miss, the Yankee Spirit, sails for Trenton
in a fortnight. She's a fine lass. A 30 footer with a tall rig.
She's got a wide beam, like many a forgiving lass. She
stands tall to the blow. Aye lassie, she's a Buchaneer what's
put together in the yards of Bayliner on the sound of
Washington. She was birthed on the Peuget and growed in
the Pacific. She sports a heavy keel and a true rudder. In
her latest years she's plied the course of Black Beard on the
nor-west Atlantic. She's made port on great gull isle, lange
isle, shelter isle, block isle, nantucket, vineyard haven, and
Rhode's isle. Aye, she's also made call on the isle of newer
Amsterdam and explored the cut of connacht. She's got fine
gunwales too. She has room for many in her hold. On
Lange isle, she took on a ole troll. He's one what's got a map
to a buried treasure, lass. We signed that ole troll on as her
navigator. Me crew of buchaneers voted and said "he what's
got the map should be ship's captain" ifn he finds us that
treasure. I seen his map lassie, and i swear he knows true
the way to that treasure. Me ship's new navigator, that ole
troll, said he would steer us through the big blows. He said
only the surest crew would cut the briny. Dem what's phony,
he swore, would be sunk by the big blow. Dem whats
concealed the treasure, fly the skull-n-bones. Me ship, the
yankee spirit flies her pretty ensign of red-n-white bars and
she's got stars in a sea of blue. Me ships ensign bears a kind
resemblance to me navigator's treasure map. That ole troll
says each star shows where each portion of the treasure is
buried. He steered us a course what makes every port. In
port, the wenches fill us with ale. We have much merriment.
Dem what's fly the skull-n-bones lassie be tryin to take the ole
troll's treasure map for demselves. But our ole troll knows true
his crew. We seals our lips and drinks our grog in jolly
merriment. At each call, the yankee spirit takes on more
crew. Each ofn'em has want for that treasure lassie. Our
new navigator, that ole troll, says "dem whats finds him the
treasure, he shall make fine their booty". Aye lassie, i must
take me leave. i needs me recuperation. Fill me grog just
once more. At the morn's early high tide, we set sail again to
find another piece of the treasure.
