annual meeting.
With the very positive reaction to last year's well-attended roundtable on homosexuality in Africa, GLAS-sponsored panels at this year's San Francisco meeting (November 23-26 at the Hyatt Embarcadero Centercontact the ASA for registration information at africa@emory.edu) will surely attract a similarly
strong response. GLAS will, in fact, sponsor three stimulating and cutting-edge panels:
1) White Boys do Southern Africa: A Queer Perspective (VI-E10).
Monday 8:45am-10:45am
2) Same Sex Unions in 20th-Century Africa (VII-J2).
Monday 11:00am-1:00pm
3) Roundtable: Researching Homosexuality in Africa: Methods, Strategies, Ethics, & Risks (XI-E22).
Tuesday 2:00pm-4:00pm
The GLAS Business Meeting will take place on Saturday, November 23 at 5:15pm.
This is the first day of the ASA meetingmake sure to be there the first day and look in the Conference Program for the room location!
Following the Business Meeting, a Reception will be held to celebrate the organization's new status within the ASA and to provide an opportunity to socialize and network.
In recognition of the growing incidence of human rights abuses against lesbians, gays, and bisexuals in the Africa regionperhaps resulting from our increasing visibilitythe reception will be co-hosted by the
International Gay Lesbian Human Rights Commission. IGLHRC is playing a critical role in monitoring abuses and advocating same-sex human rights in Africa and other developing regions. The reception will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at a location near the Hyatt.
A couple of other orders of business as we prepare for San Francisco:
1) Please note that my email address has changedI am now at mroberts@brtrc.com
2) Congratulations to Wolfram Hartmann who will begin "the final leg" of his doctoral studies this month at Columbia University's History Department.
3) Some of the GLAS member panelists who are to speak in San Francisco face serious financial challenges trying to travel from South Africa. If anyone has access to foundation or other resources or would like to make a contribution to help fund the panelists, please contact me as soon as possible.
4) We're determined to set up a web site for GLAS which can serve as a communication intermediary and a depository for information on same-sex research in Africa. If there is anyone willing to help build, maintain, and/or finance the web page please contact me.
Finally, I am working to update email addresses as well as expand interest and membership in GLAS. Please feel free to send corrections or additions to be made to the distribution list. We also seek newsworthy items and discussion topics for future newsletters and the annual meeting.
