Port Mann construction crew pours
concrete on deck extension
COQUITLAM Safely behind
construction barriers and screening, a construction crew pours concrete on the new Port
Mann Bridge deck extension. With the help of the recently installed gantry crane, concrete
and other materials is lifted from the ground to the bridge deck with minimal impact to
the travelling public. Other ongoing works on the bridge include sandblasting and painting
of girders on the main bridge span. To help protect the environment, this work is done
within white tent-like enclosures on the main bridge span. Completion of the eastbound HOV
lane is on target for spring 2001.
The following work is
ongoing on the structure: Installation of roadside bridge deck barrier
along with construction screening to ensure commuter and worker safety. Installation of
temporary median barrier is complete;
Installation of steel walkways on the underside of the bridge to allow for
worker access and future inspection and maintenance;
Installation of structural steel brackets on the outside of the bridge to widen
the deck for the additional eastbound HOV lane;
Installation of structural steel underneath the bridge to strengthen the bridge
to carry the additional eastbound HOV lane and increase the seismic capacity;
Demolition of existing maintenance walkways;
Cleaning and re-painting areas of the main bridge span to prevent corrosion
where the original coating has been deteriorated by salt and weather.
The travelling public is reminded that the
R.C.M.P. will enforce the 70-km/hour-construction zone speed limit. Vehicles exceeding the
70-km/hour construction zone speed limit are subject to a minimum fine of $173.00 and
three demerit points.
Completion of the eastbound HOV lane is on target for spring 2001.
