A legislative district is a contiguous geographic area created by dividing the state into a certain number of regions with approximately equal population. Texas is divided into 31 State Senate districts, 150 State House of Representatives districts, 30 United States Congressional districts, and 15 State Board of Education districts. The Texas Legislature defines district boundaries using population and census block data reported every ten years by the United States Census Bureau. Official representatives are elected by voters in each district to represent the interests of the people of the district.
For each legislative district, the following profiles are provided. The profiles were created by the Texas Legislative Council based on population and demographic data reported in the 1990 United States Census, school district boundaries as reported by the school districts, and legislative district information based on districts in effect for 1997.
