Crystal tones

Hayley Westenra. (Universal 0142852) Reviewed by Patrick
Shepherd.

Hayley Westenra has an undoubted talent, a crystal, pure voice
which promises much.

For any singer, this is a most accomplished album. For a
14-year-old, it is remarkable.

Her voice has an ethereal quality in the live recording of Amazing
Grace, which is both very moving and, to be honest, more
satisfying than some of the bigger production numbers.

Fine singing, too, on Ave Maria (Bach), The Mists of Islay, and
Lloyd Webber's Pie Jesu. Full marks also for God Defend New
Zealand, displaying Westenra's talent for singing in Maori as well
as English. A must for all sports promoters, I would suggest.

Her age is more apparent in songs such as I Dreamed a Dream
and All I Ask of You, where life experience plays a part. But this
is not a criticism, merely an observation. We have this to look
forward to!

This disc is a must for those who heard her demo disc last year.
If you didn't catch it but enjoy "popera" artists such as Charlotte
Church and Andrea Bocelli, this is most definitely for you.

"...this is most definitely for you."

I've been listening to Hayley's CD quite a lot since I received it by airmail from New Zealand a few days back. Hayley is a remarkable singer, with attributes and an appeal quite distinct from Charlotte's, although significantly stronger in the lower range.

Ethereal describes Hayley's style quite well, particularly in "Walking in the Air" and "Bright Eyes" -- songs that just make you reach for the repeat button again and again as you find yourself sputtering, "Unbelievable."

In this quiet period for Charlotte fans, Hayley's CD is a definite buy. The MD3s posted here are OK as samplers, but nothing in comparison to the quality on the CD itself. In contrast to some earlier assessments in this thread, I found its production values first class.

NZ has a treasure here, but Hayley surely deserves to be shared with the world.

I'm at sea, figuratively without a compass or radio -- in a way I haven't felt since I took home a copy of "Voice of an Angel" the day it was released. There was no CCF.com then -- no one I knew with whom I could share my discovery and delight.

I've been listening to Hayley's "Bright Eyes" -- repeatedly. Someone tell me you've bought this CD and, perhaps, that you're as happily lost as myself. Or is it a dream?

I got my Hayley Westenra CD yesterday and I'm listening to it now. She has a very lyrical voice, used very well. She does a good job with all the Andrew Lloyd Webber songs on the CD, although her Pie Jesu is not quite up to Charlotte's level. To my uneducated ear, she doesn't have quite the range of Charlotte and sings more comfortably in the lower register, as Dan has said. All in all, it was worth ordering the CD and it only took about a week to arrive here in the Washington, DC area, half a world away. I'm sure we'll hear more from her in the future. She might show up on PBS some day soon in one of their fundraiser specials. I guess next month, we get to check out Becky Taylor, to see if she lives up to her hype. Are we one day going to see the Three Teenage Divas?
