Message: | I've eaten at Campanile a couple of times a year ever since it opened. Certainly, it is erratic. I've had some terrific meals there, but I have also had some pretty abysmal ones. Prices always seem to stop 99 cents short of absolutely ridiculous. I remember ordering white asparagus there one spring for $12. There were three spears. That's $4 a spear, folks. On the other hand, Nancy Silverton's pastries are usually definitive. I think one reason for its popularity is the style of cooking: it seems to be the way most restaurant critics would cook if they were able to stay home at night rather than going out to mediocre restaurants. |
