In Zagat's defense, though, since it's essentially for (and from) the John Q. Public crowd, as you say, it's often a good heads-up for which restaurants will throw you major attitude if you're not one of the Beautiful People.
 
Plus, it's a useful resource to have for addresses, phone numbers, credit card info, etc., even if you don't put too much stock in its ratings or (lack of) comprehensive coverage.
