Message: | Having grown up within walking distance of Rutt's Hut in Clifton NJ, I must tell you that you will not find in LA anything that even remotely approaches the gloriousness of a Rutt's 5-star ripper, esp with a Howdy. Among the many, many great recs below, I'd add or second: Tommy's (orig at Beverly & Rampart). There's something about the visceral delight of chili grease running down your arm while you're pounding a burger. Oki-Dog (Pico nr Redondo)*. It's the pastrami burrito, stupid. Just had one yesterday--a fascinating combo of pastrami, chili, onions, peppers, grilled like a Philly cheesesteak & wrapped in a flour tortilla. Junk food hall of fame. Grand Central Market. Among many other Mexican delights, eat a fish taco at a seafood stand called Maria's (I think, or some other woman's name). Among burgers, sadly, the Jayburger stand is history. The Grubman leans toward Cassell's (6th & Berendo) two-sided broiled burgers (depending on their busy-ness, the griller may try to keep it rare for you) with DIY fixin's. *This Oki is just a few blks west of Roscoe's. If you are dining with a companion, you could get a mountain of chicken livers at Roscoe's & really slam those arteries. |
