I would recommend a few places for quick, tasty treats. Chan Darrette at Lincoln and Maxella has fairly good Thai food. In N Out at Lincoln and Washington for the quintessential California fast food experience. As mentioned in another post, Alejo's is worth a visit. And there are many places worth eating along Abbot Kinney Blvd north of Venice.
 
I'd stay away from anything in the Marina with a view of the water, unless it is specifically recommended. Most of these places are overpriced and not especially good.
 
As a general note, anything mentioned on this board as being on the "Westside" should be a pretty easy drive from wherever you are staying. Even if you stay off the freeway. :)
