The biggest problem with "dining guides" or guide books in general is that they are out of date by at least six months the moment they hit the street---I have a lot of personal experience in the guide biz, so trust me.
 
I just had a brand new one arrive on my desk which listed Boxer (closed, now Cobras & Matadors)and Remi (also closed).
 
I tend to find that if you can locate the right internet message boards, and weigh participant's tastes you can do a lot better.
 
I've never trusted the vox populi of the Zagat system.
