There's a decent Japanese place on University, just west of the 405. I can't remember the name, but it's in the mall with the Wild Oats Market. Non-chain, great Yakisoba, good Tonkatsu, and quite authentic.

If you have to "go chain," the Cheesecake Factory in Irvine Spectrum is about the best in that chain. El Cholo at Jeffrey around Culver is also decent. It's the same one from East LA. Aside from Fatburger and Mother's, I really don't like the other restaurants in the Jamboree/405 center area. Just down at Main and MacArthur are two more decent chain restaurants, McCormick & Schmick's and El Torito Grill (though, with the latter, rather than traditional Mexican foods, which they don't do too well, I'd stick with something that lets you eat as many of those fresh tortillas as possible -- lobster fajitas are best, but shrimp fajitas are a close second).

Cliff's Rajin Cajun at the Food Court at Campus and Von Karman is about the best Cajun/Creole food this side of Brookhurst (Though Bayou St. John in Seal Beach and Cajun Vic's in Huntington Beach are quite good, and maybe better)
