Well, here's my choices
 
Rock Bottom - For salmon fish & chips
La Traviata - High drama Italian
555 - Steak, steak, steak
Santa Fe Imports (not really downtown, but close by) - best Italian sandwiches in SoCal. Get a Special, old-style (meat, cheese, onions, mustard, oil only). Also Pizza dough and other things Italian.
