Last year we went to Knolls Black Forrest for V-Day and weren't that impressed, but since it was a major dining out night, I might have not been judging it fairly. (it's on the fancy side, I don't think it's simple like you asked for).
 
There is a really great casual place in Long Beach called Anneliese's Bavarian Inn that I really like. I think it's worth the drive.
 
Has anyone been to Lowenbrau on Beverly?
Best red cabbage I've had.
