I concur with Red Lion on Glendale for homey, bierstube type food. As well, there's Knoll's, although I find the attitude a bit much. Consider Lowenbrau on Beverly, Matterhorn on Oxnard for Swiss/German, I think Old Vienna is still around.
 
Another choice is Hungarian which has many similar dishes. Try Laszlo's Hortobagy on Ventura near Vineland and Csardas on Melrose.
