sorry but i don't think sweet lady jane's cakes are very good. it was the first birthday cake that i ever had when i first moved to l.a. six years ago and it was so dense, dry and tasteless that it actually depressed me. i thought "is this the so-called best cake in l.a.?"
 
i really love the cakes at la provence. i became friends with the owner/baker, farshid, because his cakes are that good. tender cake with silky pastry cream just sweet enough, perfectly ripe fruit fillings, with a marzipan message plaques - "happy birthday" etc. - i love marzipan. farshid can custom decorate cakes - my favourites have been with fresh flowers.
 
he also has assorted patisseries in the case every day. some are as good if not better than many i've had in france.
