I am a big fan of going into great, highly-selective wine stores and asking what they recommend. In that vein, I have to add onto my previous suggestion of LA Wine Co, and mention Wine Expo on Santa Monica Blvd. (near 28th?, in SM). Both of these places, unlike Wally's and Wine House, are incredibly friendly welcoming places with a large, but still manageable selection, and a large number of distinctive, VERY low priced wines.
