Hey, chowfriends.

I've been on something of a hiatus from Thai food -- used to live in Hlywd's "Thai Town" so I overdosed. But my friend C raved so much about the steamed fish at Mae Ploy that I couldn't resist going last night with him and our respective S.O.'s. (Also should give props to JGold's bk, wherein my friend learned about the place.) Definitely the best decision made in a wk of good meals.

To start: a papaya salad so delightfully fresh and tangy it prompted C to reminsce about the papaya salads made fresh for him on the beach in Thailand. (Warning -- we ordered it medium spicy and that turned out to be about all a table of experienced spice eaters could handle.)

Next: a bbq beef salad that confirmed the restaurant as a favorite as soon it arrived. The beef was perfectly charred and flavorful -- I would have been more than proud, thrilled rather to produce it on the grill at home. Alas for vegetarians, there were very few signs of green in the salad, but hey what vegetarian would order it anyway?

Then: Tofu with green beans and black mushrooms. A little musky. VERY garlicky. Perfect over rice. A great dish for vegetarians.

Wait there's more: crab noodles. Hmmmm. Totally delicious. Inspired a discussion about what the fat content in the noodles might have have come from. Butter? Didn't think so. Peanut oil? Maybe. (Any Thai cooks out there want to enlighten me?)

And finally: the famous fish. I think it was called Spicy Sour fish on the menu. A whole fish, bone intact. Crusted with cilantro root and other wonderful spices, flavors. Surprisingly crispy considering it was steamed. Yes, it lived up to it's reputation. More than lived up to.

All and all: go. Don't have the address handy but it's on Sunset in Slver Lake -- southside of the blvd, nearing Echo Park. Perhaps there's more discussion of MP on this board -- mit address -- but I haven't seen it.

Oh, and did I tell you?, a bargain. Five dishes and four beers, plus tip, came out to around sixty bucks.

Chow.
