I thought I'd post this as a request from my girlfriend since she loves this place. Having grown up in Japan for 12 years and getting shipped to the midwest for 'further' education with beer and brats(Wisconsin ya hey!), I have always craved for some down home Japanese cooking.(Sorry Chicago not quite there, except for my friend's mom's cooking)
Well, now that I live in Los Angeles, I think I have found it. Thanks to my girlfriend, Terried Sake serves what is near home cooked meals that one would easily find in a Japanese household.
The way I would describe this place is a cross of a Yakitori house, Izakaya(Sake house, traditionally a drinking and eating place) and your neighborhood diner.
You can walk in and ask for anything you may have had either visiting, stationed, lived, kidnapped or transitted at that crazy airport called Narita. My favorite is the Hamachi Kama(yellowtail collar). Ewww some may say, but believe it or not the collar is very meaty and tender. It's not too fatty like the belly or too dry like the steak. This is grilled and served with a cabbage garnish. You always have to ask for the Daikon Oroshi(Grated Daikon). A little bit of soy with the fish and perfect. I usually just have it with rice and miso.
Their Yakitori is good. The usual fanfare of chicken breast, Dango(chicken meatball), etc...
If you like tofu, their Tofu steaks are good. They are served with eggs probably mixed with Hondashi(bonito concentrate, kind of like Chicken broth cubes) served with bonito flakes.
Can't forget that they do serve sushi. But the common foods that I appreciate are:
Yakisoba (Japanese Chow Mien)
Nabe yaki Udon( Udon in a huge claypot)
Grilled fish (Yaki Zakana)
Squid Steak (Yaki Ika)get the small one
I think Nikujaga(Japanese Beef and Potatoe stew)
Unfortunately I don't have the menu but it is quite extensive. I am sure you will find something that you recognize and like from your travelling days or If you are an experienced NihonShoku(Japanese Food) consumer.
BEER AND SAKE obviously. Good sake too. The good ones are consumed cold by the way (Hiya).Remember, this is Japanese home cooking. Not your Curry Rice(Indian), Tonkatsu(Portugese), Croquette(Portugese?French?), etc. Sorry, no donburi.(Bowl dishes)
They are located on Santa Monica on the westside between Barry and Federal, just east of Barrington.
Itadakimasu!!!!
P.S. Try using the Japanese names
