Speculations : The Rumor Mill : Kent Brewster : Trouble Logging In?

Topic 369 was started on 2000-03-08. There are 200 messages available to read.

I'm hijacking the Test Your Login topic and am asking people who have trouble logging in to the new 'n improved Rumor Mill to let me know here. Thanks!

6-11-2003: I've added a password recovery form on the login screen. You'll need to be able to access the e-mail you specified when you created your Rumor Mill account; enter it and your login and password will be sent to you automagically.

Karen: nice hat! :) Sorry, that form was confusing. I've documented it better now; it should be fairly clear to people that they'll only get their password sent to the e-mail address they used when they signed up. Pretty standard deal.

Well, I just tested it out with one of my secondary e-mail addresses, and got the message "If we have a password for that address, it will be sent out." So looks like Kent already took that issue into account. :)

Especially given the nature of so many people's user name's.

Puts on computer security hat.

It worries me just a tad, though, Kent. The 'recover your password page' just asks for the username, and then sends the password to any e-mail address a person chooses. I'm very pleased that the e-mail that gets sent says something along the lines of "If you weren't expecting this e-mail, let us know," but if someone were to abuse this, all they would have to do is guess a username (which is probably fairly easy for most of us) and then send the password wherever they please.

And most people, unfortunately, tend to use the same passwords for many accounts.

I was thinking maybe it would be better to just send the e-mail automatically to whatever e-mail address the user has in their profile. In my case, it would have backfired, because I've closed that account, but still. On the other hand, that would mean that every time that scenario happened (someone changed their e-mail w/o a forward, and then forgot a username or password) they'd have to resort to contacting you, like in the old days.

And, of course, if someone wanted to maliciously impersonate someone else here on RM, at least for a little while, this would be a really easy way to do it.

Security hat off.

Just an observation. People should know not to use sensitive passwords on an open system like this. =)

I'm delighted it worked, Karen. You're my first live test!

Thanks, Kent, for adding the "recover your password" option. Just used it after 6 mo. of having forgotten my username instead of my password. =)

I tried to log in but I think I've forgotten my password -either that or I messed up the original log-in, and now I have no idea what I'm doing. Sorry. Can you help?

Yes, that's right, Karen.

I set up a new account for log-in. The system very nicely displayed what I had typed. It offered me the chance to change the info, the password, etc. It didn't have an obvious way out of the fiddling-menu. I chickened out and clicked on the main menu from the title stack on top. Was that right?

Hi, Kent,

I've long ago forgotten my ID and password. As of this morning, I've decided to ask for it again. I thought there was a contact form to use but I can't locate it, so hopefully posting here will catch your attention.

Thank you very much.

Help.

We look like spam, Karen, especially that last text-only issue, in which I complain about being spammed and use examples. Working on solutions now ... please hang in there.

On the off-chance that there is anyone else at Speculations who posts from, or communicates with Speculations from, a University of Minnesota e-mail account, be aware that the new (highly effective, well run) SPAM filters are blocking our fearless leader Kent. I've contacted the SPAM filter mavens to look into it, and have made a personal exception so he can e-mail me. Others will have to do the same until the SPAM mavens have a definitive answer.

Kent, I'm very sorry. The system is blocking hundreds of spams for me, you're the first legit person to get blocked.

Re: #183

Genevieve,

Without details I don't suspect you'll get much help. However, maybe this is the problem you're having:

1. Go back to www.speculations.com
2. Click on The Rumor Mill.
3. At the top of the page, you'll see "Log In." Click on that, and you'll be taken to the log in page.

I have to admit, that took a bit of thinking on my part when I first joined up - don't know why, but it did. Anyway, hope that helps. And if it doesn't - sorry! Maybe someone else can help (after you provide some more details). :-)

For Edith: Yipe! I appreciate your frustration, let me try to help. When you type:

speculations.com/rumormill

in the "go to" line, that will take you to the Mill in its unexploded version. The folder icons next to the topics can be clicked, showing the list of subtopics. I think the folder that will interest you most is the "Caveat Scrivener" one. The subtopics "Ask Jarndyce," "Agents: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly" will likely be the best ones for you. Click on the underlined subtopic, and that will take you to the message list.
If I may, your question as posed is a bit fuzzy. Are you in process of getting an agent and want to know how to go about it? Or are you contracted with an agent, are unhappy with it, and want to leave?

IN any case, I hope this does better for you.

Best regards,
Gregory Koster

It has offered discussion of issues that interest me, but does not offer the tech to see even one post!!! 30 minutes of numerous blank boxes!!! There are so many good models of bulletin boards. Please get one!

Hi,

I'm have burned 30 minutes trying to get into this site and have concluded that it's hopeless and a waste of my time. So far, zero results. I can't even find how to read the supposedly many posts or recognize my post. Jeeze, there are so many good bulletin board models. Evolve from this useless model.

Bye.

Edith Wiethorn, attempting to find out more about defining the "agent relationship".

Ok, if I have an author topic, does that mean I have a login account already? I vaguely recall signing up for one a looooooong time ago, can't remember the little details like login name or password, though.

Is it possible to get a password reset sent to my current e-mail account? (I've gone through several since I may have created a login way back when.)

oh, current e-mail addy is blblalock

domain is attbi.com

of course you know there's an @ between those. Die spambots die.

If I ever had a password, I certainly don't recall it. Is there a mechanism for mailing passwords or giving clues or some such?

Lawrence

Are we supposed to log in? What does that do? Where does one do that? Is this the same log-in we had a long time ago? Do I have a password and if so, what the heck is it? For that matter, do I have a screen name I should be using? Why all the changes? Why are the author's entries stuck in with the topics? What happened to all the organization?

Jeez, you leave for a couple of months and the place goes to Heck...
