Jamie: I pitched the actor's voice up about 400 cents using a Harmonizer during the actual recording (to make him sound small), and threw a 1 frame delay on top of that with a Lexicon (to give it a metallic quality).

It's good to put the treatment on the actor's voice during recording because then the actor can work with the treatment. Still, I wasn't really happy with the result, so I messed around with some Pro Tools plug-ins during post production and found something I liked in a plug-in called Ultrapitch. In Ultrapitch I used a treatment called Sax Octavier which gave the voice a nice fuzzy metallic quality.

Two short fiction reviews have appeared at Kansas City infoZine. One of SDO Detective (Issue 1) and one of Champagne Shivers (Issue 5).

There also is an article up about the World Horror Convention, which was in Kansas City this year.

The "Display Until" date indicates when newsstands are supposed to take the magazine off their shelves, to replace it with the new issue. There may be more arcane substrata to it, but that's the gist.

Howdy, everybody!

See it before you have to buy it (hopefully). I've uploaded some of my new hard SF novel The Falling Sky on my website www.amaysingstories.com as well as a bunch of my short stories. Give it a read and tell me what you think. I welcome any and all praise or constructive criticisms. Thanks and good reading!!

OK. Cool. Talked to my insurance people today, and everything's cool. According to them technically I'm still working for a law firm, and just on a leave of absence and this art this is just a "hobby" (which, in one version of the universe is true, which is fine by me). Of course, to the IRS, the art thing is a different matter. But, as far as car insurance goes, everything's fine, nothing has to change, my rates don't go up. Everything's fine. So thanks everyone (esp. Charlie) for your support and input. I really appreciate.

Looks like the April issue of Realms of Fantasy was listed as the June issue. The actual June issue should be out soon.

One hopes.

Frank - if your art is not a vocation, but an avocation (and, not knowing much about you but thinking I recall you are also a scientist of some sort) - you can be an artist and not be doing "business" as such.

Would a woman who sells her crafts at flea markets be "dinged" for getting rear-ended if she was going to A.C.Moore (a local craft supply house.)?

Message 1256 was left by FrankWu on 2003-05-03 03:11:14. Feedback: 0/0

Not sure where to post this. This is about car insurance and being an artist/writer.

So... I was rear-ended a couple weeks ago, and I'm fine, car got fixed, everything's ok, it was the other guy's fault (duh).

Now... my insurance co. asked me where I was going at the time - and I told them that I was an artist and I was on my way to do an art-related thing (picking up slides). So... now I have to call them tomorrow, and I suspect what they want to argue is that since I'm an artist, I should be paying for a "business type" car insurance, not a "personal" car insurance. As if, for example, I were a pizza delivery guy driving around delivering pizzas.

The thing is that I make some money, but not a whole lot of money doing art - and I quit my "real" job six months ago, so I could argue that technically I'm unemployed.

Any thoughts? It sure seems to me that even though it wasn't my fault, they're going to try to find a way to jack up my car insurance premium.

Any thoughts? Please help!

Frank

We're in production on a second installment of the CBC Radio show Faster Than Light hosted by Robert J. Sawyer. This is sort of both good news and bad news. The good news is that our chances of getting on the air regularly have just greatly increased; the bad news is that this version of the show we're producing is just a "proof of concept" version and may or may not go to air.

In other words, we've still got to prove ourselves to the CBC brass. They liked the original pilot but want to hear a further refinement of the concept. This version of the show will be half an hour long, will include an original science fiction radio drama, an interview with a science fiction author, and otherwise as much zaniness as I can manage to cram into it. I've got two weeks to write it, record it, and put it together, so wish me luck!

Sam's Dot Publishing (samsdotpublishing.com) just released my illustrated poetry chapbook 'Osteoporoses'. It features 13 poems and 10 illustrations (not including the cover). Very nice production values, I might add.

They've also put out illustrated chaps from poets like David C. Kopaska-Merkel, Christina Sng, Julie Shiel, Erin Donahoe, and more.

Sam's Dot is a fine outfit.

Also, a PDF version my Eraserhead Press paperback (SHALL WE GATHER AT THE GARDEN?) is still available at users.chartertn.net/mbs/kldwriter/

Finally, BARE BONE #4 will go to the printers in about a little over a month or so.

Well, that's all for now.

Until next time,

Kevin

RE: 1249. Before anyone dumps on me, let me make clear that
certain of the 30's and 40's pulps had a thing about covers
depicting aliens running off with scantily-clad femmes. This
persisted into various movies, including one of the
Creature from the Black Lagoon pix, IIRC.

aliens is because they want our women! ;-)

Hey Frank, make the cover look like a pin-up calendar of aliens! ;)

Hey, everybody! I just got the commission to do the cover for "Why I Hate Aliens". Who's all in it? What I want to do is a cover design that somehow or other incorporates all the aliens in it. It'll make my job a heck of a lot easier if you've got a paragraph or something that describes the physical aspects of your creatures. I always read the texts two or three or four times, but I sometimes manage to miss something or other. And here, since we're dealing with alien anatomy, I want to make sure I get everything right!

Oh, well, just trying to help. I could care less whether anyone buys the book. In fact, I'd rather no one else did, so I alone would benefit from the advice.
My message didn't look like spam to me. If all advice is spam, I don't see the point of sharing opinions. I wouldn't have wasted so much time, just as I'm doing now. Happy bunny day.

Writers:

Yeah, never do this. Never resubmit a story an editor had rejected and put in the subject line "important resubmission" when a resubmission had not been requested. Then, in your cover letter of your resubmission, never state: "Respectfully, I think you did not notice that my story was one of indescribable horror."

But most of all! And this is important, folks. Never, ever, ever, after having gone over all the reasons your story is everything a magazine should want in a story, never have the nerve to say this: "Please feel free to make any changes you need to convey this."

I'm glad I can feel free to make any changes in my editorial decision necessary, but I glanced back over the story, and each point I made in my original response remained true.

Unbelievable. People never cease to amaze me.
