For those interested in this sort of thing, the Storyville anthology is now up at http://www.dowse.com/storyville-anth/. You might recognize several names represented therein...

(Oh, and I'm in it, too.)

I just thought I'd hijack this thread to point out that there's a story by Mikal Trimm in Issue 3 of Andromeda Spaceways. You can order a copy of that issue via:
http://www.spacejock.iinet.net.au/shop/

I now return you to your regular service!

Hey Mikal --

Yep, your comments helped quite a bit, mainly the part about Joshua growing less believable as the plot progressed, and I also made the scissors scene much less forced. Of course, some critter-ers told me that also, and I did a ton of other revisions too, adding a new little ghost at the end.

Sweet! (Where's my agent's fee?)

Congrats on the sale, though! Tyree isn't exactly an unknown quantity, so the exposure shouldn't hurt.

(Now, what the hell did I tell you about the story...? If it involved juggling kangaroos, I was a bit drunk that night...)

I can think of three good, non-animated musicals. Singin' In the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, and Pierrot le Fou. (That last one is one of Goddard's nouvelle vague films; not really a musical, it does have two musical numbers in it -- in one of them, the male lead simply stares at the female lead in disbelief when it's "his turn" to sing, while in the other he sings very badly.)

I suppose Mary Poppins should count, too, but it's partly animated.

Mikal,

I saw you asked Michael if your comments helped him to his sale...just wanted to let you know I revised that story of mine you read, "Process of Elimination" per your suggestion and sold it to Tyree Campbell. Not a lot of money, but a sale I likely wouldn't have garnered without your advice, so...THANKS!

I'm one of those people who have a natural grasp of chess (the game) but could never be bothered to put in the study needed to excel at it. (Actually, the same could be said for my music, I suppose...)

As far as Musicals--there are a handful I enjoy, and the rest of them exist in some other world that I don't have a grasp on. Sondheim--sure, bring him on! Rogers & Hammerstein and their ilk, however--oy (with the exception of 'The King And I' and one or two others, perhaps.)

So are you a chess enthusiast, Mikal, or just a musical enthusiast?

One more Chess quote (my favorite)

"Siam's going to be a witness to the ultimate test of cerebral fitness."

Regarding "Chess": my understanding was that "Chess" was dumbed down for American audiences (also that it was changed because the original version had only one American character, and he was a bit of an a**hole). May be true, maybe not, but that's what I heard.

Message 43 was left by Lori on 2003-01-28 15:48:48. Feedback: 0/0

Ooooooh...Buffy AND One Night in Bangkok in the same post! Heaven!

I'd let you watch, I would invite you, but the queens we use would not excite you...

Message 40 was left by Mikal Trimm on 2003-01-23 20:26:17. Feedback: 0/0

Yeah, there was a production, now that I remember, but it was MUCH changed (score-wise, at least) from the original two-album set that came out before the show was ever presented. And at least a few of the songs cut were some of my favorites (the more pop-like ABBA-type songs, I believe), so I shunned it. Tim Rice, indeed! He can go suck the same tailpipe that Andrew Lloyd Weber should have his useless lips around about now...

Now, Sondheim, that's another story...*dusts the shrine*

Message 39 was left by Lori on 2003-01-23 18:26:08. Feedback: 0/0

I thought it had been produced in Britain, at least.

Hey, all you Buffy fans--did you know that Murray Head, the guy who took "One Night in Bangkok" onto the pop charts, is Anthony Stewart Head's brother? I noticed in the musical episode that he was the only one who could really sing.

I get my kicks *above* the waistline, sunshine.

Mikal, if you're an ABBA fan, may I assume you know about the A Teens? (Have you seen their video for Dancing Queen?)

Message 36 was left by Susan on 2003-01-23 12:09:15. Feedback: 0/0

It's definitely been produced. I know that there are at least two versions of the cast album floating around--there's an American version and a British version, and they differ pretty substantially.

I've also seen it staged by three different amateur/student companies, and (horror of horrors) worked as props director for one of those stagings. Sigh.

Message 35 was left by amber on 2003-01-23 11:11:29. Feedback: 0/0

it was never produced?
weird.
i always thought it had been. No matter.
at one time I had three or more versions of ONIB, so.

yah :)

Re #33: I've written a fantasy/murder-mystery/chess novella (called "Checkmate"), though I must confess that "One Night in Bangkok" had nothing to do with its inspiration.

Message 33 was left by Terry Bramlett on 2003-01-22 22:50:09. Feedback: 0/0

I still have a murder mystery chess novel in my mind when I hear One Night in Bangkok. One day I might even write it.

Oh, and Marsheila--

You *still* wanna try that Abba reference?...

Did you know Frida's dad was a Nazi?

(just try me...)

Message 31 was left by Mikal Trimm on 2003-01-22 22:20:24. Feedback: 0/0

...And the world's your oyster.

Yep, that Chess, although it went through a long, tortured history before it failed miserably...

(I think they revamped the original lineup, music, etc. and it *might* have played(?), but the original lineup of songs and actors/singers was pretty great, even though the show wasn't even staged yet...)

Message 30 was left by Lori on 2003-01-22 19:15:06. Feedback: 0/0

One Night in Bangkok? That Chess?

Message 29 was left by Mikal Trimm on 2003-01-22 18:48:10. Feedback: 0/0

Oh, it gets worse, Amber--I have the soundtrack to the never-produced Broadway musical 'Chess', cowritten by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus--the two guys from ABBA.

DOUBT ME AT YOUR PERIL!!!

Message 26 was left by Mikal Trimm on 2003-01-21 18:43:03. Feedback: 0/0

AAAAAHHHHH!!! OBLIGATORY ABBA REFERENCE!!!

I LOVE ABBA, dammit! And I'm not even joking. AND I'm hetero!

'Smiling, having fun, (su-pa-pa troo-pa-pa)
Feeling like a number one...'

Don't even get me STARTED on 'Mamma Mia'...or 'SOS'...or 'Dancing Queen'...or...

Message 25 was left by Marsheila Rockwell on 2003-01-21 11:47:02. Feedback: 0/0

Yup...first it was the painting career (which was actually quite successful, but I got pigeon-holed very quickly and so had to move on to other mediums to express myself in new ways), then the music, now I'm on to writing. Hopefully I'll stick with this one for awhile. ;)

"Super-trooper, life is gonna find me shining like the sun..."

Or words to that effect!

Message 24 was left by Mikal Trimm on 2003-01-17 22:33:48. Feedback: 0/0

LOL!

You are a true happy-camper--look up 'trouper' in the dictionary, and there you are! And I still like that song you did in the eighties, what was it...oh, yeah, "Somebody's Watching Me". Great stuff. Shame about that musical career, though...

(Oh, lord, I've let the references get away from me again...)

Message 23 was left by Marsheila Rockwell on 2003-01-17 19:05:34. Feedback: 0/0

I don't know, Mikal...I think only short women would be offended by the use of the word "runt"...

Message 22 was left by Mikal Trimm on 2003-01-16 21:36:31. Feedback: 0/0

Fine.

Just use 'eldritch' as one of your topics elsewhere, and let's see what I can rhyme with it...

(Y'know, Rockwell wouldn't be that tough, either.)

Okay, offensive joke time:

The Pope is on a plane, traveling to one of his many appearances, and he's doing a crossword puzzle. He turns to one of his advisors and asks, "What's a four-letter word for a certain type of woman, ending in u-n-t?

His advisor answers, "Aunt."

The Pope says, "Oh, yeah, that works too. You got an eraser?"

(Ba-da-dum!)

HEY!!! I *SAID* IT WAS OFFENSIVE!!!

(Just waiting for my obligatory hate-mail...)"

Message 21 was left by Marsheila Rockwell on 2003-01-16 19:18:24. Feedback: 0/0

(Nyah, nyah...you can't hit me, I'm too far away...)

Message 20 was left by Mikal Trimm on 2003-01-14 14:48:38. Feedback: 0/0

Hmmm...

(Thinking of a poetry topic that rhymes with 'hitch'...)
