The OMEGA study is a cohort of 1,489 (as of September 30, 2000) HIV seronegative men of the Montreal area who have affective and sexual relations with other men (MASM).  This study aims to estimate the incidence of HIV in MASM and to identify its associated behavioural as well as psycho-socio-sexual determinants.  Funding was secured in January 1996 and first participant was interviewed in October 1996.

Objectives: We use the questionnaires and serology at entry point to describe the characteristics and HIV risk behaviours of the 314 OMEGA participants reporting having received money, drugs, and/or other goods in exchange for sex, comparing the ones who received drugs for sex (PROS-D, n=97) with those who did not (PROS-ND, n=217).

Discussion: Among the prostitutes, the PROS-D are in a more difficult socio-economic situation.  For them, selling sex may be the only way to get the drugs they need.  The physical and psychological addiction to drugs can force these men to do some sexual behaviours that they would not normally do.  This could explain the broader range of sexual behaviours with clients and the higher proportion of non-gays in this group.

Conclusions: PROS-D have more HIV risk behaviours than the other PROS.  HIV interventions on PROS should focus on those using drugs especially injection drugs.  HIV interventions on PROS should also focus on their sex life with non-paying partners.  More researches are needed to better understand male prostitution and HIV risk.
