MATCHROOM
GOLF claimed its second European Tour victory of 2003 when Englands
Greg Owen took his maiden tour title at the Daily Telegraph Damovo
British Masters at the Marriott Forest Of Arden.
Owen, who has
long been considered as one of Europe's leading talents, battled
hard with countryman Ian Poulter in an electric front nine on the
final day, which saw him make impressive birdies at holes six, seven
and eight.
Bogeys at 15
and 16 were cancelled out by a stunning 3-iron to the water guarded
par five 17th, which all but guaranteed victory.
An emotional
Owen commented: "Its a moment I will never forget. Not
winning in Portugal hit me really hard, it really hurt.
"I waited
for another chance and winning it in England at such a prestigious
tournament is a dream come true, I believe now that days like these
are meant to be.
"They say
that your first win is always the hardest and I would have to go
along with that. Now that I've tasted it I want it again and this
gives me a great stepping stone to the Majors and next year's Ryder
Cup. I believe the confidence that this win will give me will take
my game to another level."
Matchroom Golfs
first Tour victory came in March, when Welshman Bradley Dredge captured
the 2003 Madeira Island Open.
