$85 - Standard Pack [Buy] The G4 is the lightest large-volume pack with a waist belt available. It includes many unique features. The back and bottom are constructed of polyurethane-coated 200 denier nylon oxford for strength and abrasion resistance. The rest of the pack is constructed of polyurethane-coated 70 denier 2.2 oz. ripstop nylon. Shoulder straps are 3˝” “hollow” oxford to allow insertion of socks or foam for padding. Waistbelt is 1.5” webbing with “hollow” oxford sides to add gloves/socks or foam for padding. Back is set up for six to eight sections of Z-Rest pad that is the standard 20” width. The G4 is available either Standard, or Semi-Custom sewn with your choice of color and options. The Standard and Semi-Custom packs both come in "small", "medium" and "large". The difference is we move the shoulder strap tops up 1" for the "large". For the "small" we move the shoulder strap tops down 2" and shorten the shoulder straps and waist belt. Approximate torso length fitting is: "large"(24"-20"); "medium"(18"-22"); "small"(16"-19"). Note: 99.2% of women find that the small fits them better than the medium. When in doubt between the small and the medium, order the medium, since a pack that is a little large will work better than one that is a little small. If you have any questions, order a regular G4 first, which are "medium" size, try it on, and then mail it back in accordance with our return policy.

Tips for Use The basic premise in the design of the G4 is using the lightest materials possible and utilizing packed items as part of the pack. The “frame” of the G4 is your sleeping pad. The padding for shoulder and waist straps are sleeping socks and gloves/hat, using items that would normally just be weight in your pack when walking. The original pack used by Glen Van Peski utilizes 6 sections of a Z-Rest® cut down to a 15” width. Glen figures that he really only needs padding between his shoulders and rear, since your legs don’t contact the ground at that many points, and there is always something to put under your head. Six sections of Z-Rest® give you a 30” length. The standard G4 is set up for the Z-Rest to be untrimmed, a 20” width. If you want a little longer pad, you can go with 8 sections (approximately 40”). The G4 is not designed to work with pads longer than 8 sections. If you want a sleeping pad longer than 40”, the G4 may not make sense for you, because you will be carrying an extra sleeping pad. For packing, sit on your pad and stow the sleeping bag in the bottom of the pack. When you turn in for the night, the G4 should be essentially empty, and some people use it as a ground cloth beneath the lower portion of their body not covered by the ˝-length sleeping pad. Since the G4 seams are not sealed, we recommend using a trash compactor bag or mylar turkey roasting bag for protecting your sleeping bag and clothes. Stow you sleeping bag in the bottom of the pack. The bottom of the pack is expanded to provide area for your sleeping bag and minimize loss of loft. You may want to dispense with the stuff sack and just push the bag directly into the pack. The sleeping bag on the bottom helps raise the center of gravity. When you take off your sleeping socks, stuff them into the shoulder straps for padding. You may be wearing your hat and gloves to start, and have nothing to put in the waist belt. However, if it is cold, you will be wearing your jacket, which can provide padding. Next put the food and clothes in. If you start out early in the morning, you may be wearing most of your clothes. Loading pockets with food for the morning will allow you not to have to stop to remove food from your pack. When the day warms up and you stop to strip clothing, we recommend putting the clothing below the food, since the clothing is usually less dense, and that packing order will raise the center of gravity. If your tarp/tent/groundcloth is damp, it can be placed in the large back pocket. It will not get your other gear wet, and may dry a little. The side pockets are designed to store water (the tall Platypus fits nicely), first aid kit and “ten essential” items that you want to have ready access to. Once your pack is packed, you can get up, fold up your pad, and slip it into the back of the pack. Under normal loads pull the elastic closure tight, and slip the toggle through through the webbing loop in the lower center of the pack. This serves as a quick release access. The shock cord allows you to stuff clothing items into the pack without even loosening the toggle. When carrying a full load after a large resupply or taking another hiker’s gear, just cinch up the shock cord at the top of the extension collar.
