Jonathan Bamford, Assistant Commissioner

Jonathan Bamford, Assistant CommissionerJonathan Bamford joined the staff of the Data Protection Registrar when the office was first established in early 1985. He has remained through the transition to Information Commissioner with the introduction of the Data Protection Act 1998 and Freedom of Information Act 2000. He is currently Assistant Commissioner heading the Policy Development and Quality Group which has responsibility for the oversight of the development of the Commissioner’s policy on  data protection issues. The Group also has responsibility for the United Kingdom’s participation in the EU Working Group established under the EU Data Protection Directive.

Prior to assuming these responsibilities he was Assistant Commissioner responsible for the Law Enforcement, Justice and Inspections Compliance Group with responsibility for ensuring organisations involved in policing, law enforcement, frontier control and the criminal justice system comply with the requirements of both the freedom of information and data protection legislation. He was also responsible for developing the Commissioner’s compliance auditing expertise. Prior to joining the Commissioner's staff he was employed by the Equal Opportunities Commission dealing with Sex Discrimination and Equal Pay cases.
