Table-4 : Population, Population in the age group 0-6 and literates by sex - Urban Agglomeration : 2001. (Sheet-1)

This table gives the population, population in the age group 0-6 and literates by sex for all the Urban Agglomerations in the country.

The concept Urban Agglomeration is given below :-

Urban Agglomeration : Urban agglomeration is a continuous urban spread constituting a town and its adjoining urban outgrowths (OGs), or two or more physical contiguous towns together and any adjoining urban outgrowths of such towns. Examples of Outgrowth are railway colonies, university campuses, port area, military camps etc. that may have come up near a statutory town or city but within the revenue limits of a village or villages contiguous to the town or city.

For Census of India, 2001, it was decided that the core town or at least one of the constituent towns of an urban agglomeration should necessarily be a statutory town and the total population of all the constituents should not be less than 20,000 (as per 1991 Census). With these two basic criteria having been met, the following are the possible different situations in which urban agglomerations could be constituted.

  1. a city or town with one or more contiguous outgrowths;

      1. two or more adjoining towns with or without their outgrowths;

iii) a city and one or more adjoining towns with their outgrowths all of

which form a continuous spread.

Urban Agglomerations, however, do not extend beyond the state.

It may be noted that the UAs may also extend to more than one district in such case the totals for the parts of UAs following in each of the different districts are also shown.

The constituents of UAs have not been given in this table.

Column number-1 gives the serial number of the Urban Agglomerations.

Column number-2 gives the name of the Urban Agglomerations.

Column number-3 gives the State code of the State in which the Urban Agglomerations falls.

Column number-4 gives the name of the States/Union territories.

Column number-5 gives the district code of the district in which the Urban Agglomeration falls. In case an Urban Agglomeration falls in more than one district, all the district codes have been shown against such Urban Agglomeration. However, the data for parts of Urban Agglomeration falling in different districts are shown separately in Sheet No. 2 of the same file.

Column number-6 gives the name of the district.
