Newcastle Arena Changes Name In Major Sponsorship Deal

Newcastle Arena The Telewest Arena Newcastle is to change name after a major new sponsorship deal.

The 'Telewest Arena' will become the 'Metro Radio Arena' from this month after a seven figure deal was reached between the North East market's leading radio company and SMG Europe, owners and operators of the venue.

The Newcastle agreement is in place for a minimum of three years and the deal will enable the venue to continue to attract world class performers. Over the coming months concerts are already scheduled for Justin Timberlake, Shania Twain, Westlife and Eric Clapton.

The 11,000 seater purpose built Metro Radio Arena (formerly the Telewest Arena) was the brainchild of former Animals stars, Chas Chandler and Nigel Stanger. It opened in November 1995 with a star studded Basketball game, and David Bowie was the first concert on Thursday December 7th.

Since its opening in November '95, the Metro Radio Arena has quickly established itself as a superb venue and major contribution to Newcastle's enhanced European status. It has already played host to millions of visitors to concerts, exhibitions, conferences and premier league Basketball and ice hockey.

John Petter, Customer Strategy Director of Telewest Broadband, said: "We have been a supporter of the Arena for 6 years and have decided it is time to move on but we still remain committed to investing in the region."

Sally Aitchison, Managing Director of Metro Radio, said: "As we enter our 30th year, Metro Radio is well-established as the North East's biggest radio station. There's a lot of natural synergy between Metro Radio and the Arena; we have the best mix of music with more variety than any other in the region- and that's exactly what the Metro Radio Arena will be bringing to people across the North East."

She added: "Some of the biggest names in the music world will be appearing at the arena this year and even more are planned over the next three years of the agreement."

Colin Revel, Executive Director of the venue, said: "The partnership between SMG, world leaders in venue management, and the region's biggest radio station will further enhance the status of our Arena. This will undoubtedly help us to continue to attract world class events whilst, at the same time, improve the overall experience for our North East public."
