Q.What is the difference between a commission and a committee?

 A. Each standing committee is accountable to the parish council for planning, budgeting, implementing and evaluating their goals for their mission area. In small parishes, one committee is generally responsible for all aspects of a particular mission area: Prayer and Worship, Christian Formation, etc.

Larger parishes often sub-divide the work of a committee. This is illustrated in the Parish Committee Resource Book. Sometimes, when parishes have so many sub-committees that they are inundated with reports, the council will suggest that they turn to a commission structure to share and streamline the oversight work of the council.

The commission is made-up of the chairpersons of the various sub/committees. The commission members meet as often as needed (perhaps 3-4 or more times a year) to plan, oversee and evaluate committee work; create a common calendar, and develop reports for communication to the council. The commission, not the committees, report to the council. A council liaison connects with the commission rather than all the sub-committees. Committees are accountable to the commission.
