Formed in 1978 | Style | Hard rock | | Original line-up: Brent Lucanus (vocals), Lino del Roio (guitar) Camillo del Roio (guitar), Robbie Salpietro (bass), Tony Cimino (drums) | | Albums: The Boys (Festival/Parole, 1981), Inside the Cage (Festival/Parole, 1982). | History Guitar-playing siblings Lino and Camillo del Roio formed The Boys in Perth while still at high school. Originally known as Rockhouse Corporation, the band's punchy and appealing brand of hard rock (somewhere between early AC/DC and The Angels) attracted a fanatical following in Perth. The Boys were often able to pull 1000 fans to their pub gigs.
Carmelo Sallazzo replaced original drummer Tony Cimino in 1979. Festival signed the band and issued the singles `You Better Move on'/`Schoolgirls' (June, 1980) and `When You're Lonely'/`It Doesn't Matter' (August 1980) on the Parole label. `When You're Lonely' reached #1 on the Perth charts and attracted interest in the eastern states. The band toured Melbourne and Sydney in 1981. Meanwhile, Frank Celenza replaced Sallazzo on drums. In November 1981, Festival issued the album The Boys which yielded two further singles, `Hurt Me Babe'/`Coming Home' (March) and `Weoh Weoh Weoh'/`One Way' (September).
At the end of 1981, The Boys supported AC/DC at Perth's Entertainment Centre. Paul McCarthy replaced Brent Lucanus as frontman, only to be replaced by Wayne Green in early 1982. Inside the Cage (November 1982) and the singles `Don't Say No'/`Why'd Ya Do That?' (September) and `Lonely Dreamers'/`Cold Mind' (March 1983) failed to match the success of the band's earlier releases. Nevertheless, with the release of the album, The Boys supported UK heavy metal visitors Iron Maiden on that band's November 1982 Australian tour. The Boys broke up in 1983. Lino and Camillo, with Celenza, resurrected The Boys in 1987 with a new line-up of Tony Celiberti (keyboards), Eddie Parise (bass) and Tony Newman (vocals). The Boys became Boyschool in 1988, but a year later had broken up. Celenza and Parise moved on to Baby Animals. |
