Interested in Having Your Own Domain Name?
Each web site has a unique IP (Internet protocol) address, which consists of a long string of numbers separated by dots. Since most people have trouble remembering these numbers, the domain name was created. The domain name for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is http://www.archmil.org.

Although not required, your parish or school might be interested in having its own domain. The first step toward getting one is to find if the name you want is taken. To do this, go to www.whois.net to see if the name you want is available. Once you find a name that's available, you have to register it with Internic. It's the organization that keeps track of which domain names correspond with what IP numbers. There's a $70 fee that registers your domain for the first two years and an annual maintenance fee of $35 after that. You may also be charged by your Internet Service Provider for domain services. Make sure you check with them before you make any decisions regarding your own domain.

As an organization you'll need to determine if these expenses are necessary. If you decide they are, start the process as soon as possible because registered names are going fast. As you can imagine, www.stmary.org is already taken.
