     Special Invitation to Merging Parishes

  Special Invitation to Merging Parishes
By Bishop Richard J. Sklba

These past months have not been easy for those parish communities which have been asked to join their neighboring communities in a new and closer manner. There have been so many matters, major and minor alike, which have demanded your attention. We are all grateful for that effort, often beginning anew each week.

There are a few basic items which do need your action as soon as possible if you are to be a founding partner in the new electronic communication system of the Archdiocese.

At least one of the merging parishes in each group should establish an account for Internet access and an e-mail address, as soon as possible. Unfortunately an address through JUNO is not sufficient because, although it offers free e-mail, it provides neither access to the Internet nor the ability to receive e-mail with an attached file / document. (That ability is possible through Juno, but at extra cost; hence another service provider is better for all concerned).

The vision presumes a system within which parishes can communicate electronically with each other, as well as with central offices.

Although many choose to use their own parish name in establishing an e-mail address, merged parishes may wish to avoid highlighting one community over another or find that their name (i.e., many "St Mary's" in a given area) is already used by the service provider of choice. Therefore a newly merged parish may decide to select something biblical, liturgical or pastoral (like Allenton's Alleluia@nconnect.net or the Archdiocesan Office of Prayer and Worship's Oremus@archmil.org). Be creative!

After the parish establishes its corporate account, the mail server at the Cousins Center can provide a free personal e-mail address for each staff member of any parish in the archdiocese. Thus Mary Smith in Beaver Dam could get her e-mail at smithm@archmil.org and Jose Gonzalez in Wilmot could receive his mail at gonzalezj@archmil.org. There will be no charge for this service.

Thanks for your cooperation.
