SAN FRANCISCO, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2002 - The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today released the 2002 edition of the Latino Heritage Month media resource kit. Using Latino Heritage Month in September as a spring board, this media reference was developed to encourage journalists to be more inclusive of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Latino community.

GLAAD partnered with several LGBT Latino organizations around the country, including LLEGÓ, the National Latina/o Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Organization; Mano a Mano (New York), Latitud 0º: The Ecuadorian LGBT Movement (New York), Las Buenas Amigas (New York), GALDE (New York), QuisGLeya (New York), HoMoVisiones (New York), Latino Gay Men of New York (New York), Colombian Lesbian and Gay Association (New York), Ellas En Acción (San Francisco), Proyecto ContraSIDA Por Vida (San Francisco), The Wall/Las Memorias (Los Angeles), Bienestar (Los Angeles), Rio Grande Adelante (El Paso), Grupo Vida (Dallas), and ALLGO (Austin).

"Invisibility and defamation by omission are two key reasons why homophobia and stereotypes of the LGBT Latino community persist in the media," said GLAAD Cultural Interest Media Manager Loren R. Javier. "We?re proud to be partnering with LGBT Latino organizations on this resource to help promote greater visibility and inclusion in media coverage."

The media resource kit includes educational terminology that affects LGBT Latinas/os, a a resource on issues affecting the LGBT Latino community, a list of notable or famous LGBT Latinas/os, an organization list, and a list of events and a media contact list.

?This media resource is an important tool that will help journalists covering the growing influence of Latinos in the United States," said Mano a Mano Director Andr&eqcute;s Duque, "I hope this kit inspires reporters to delve deeper into Latino culture and, specifically, into Latino LGBT culture, not only when reporting on gay issues, but also when reporting on issues relevant to the community at large."

The Latino Heritage Month media resource kit is one of three media references that GLAAD releases annually and are designed to promote visibility of LGBT communities of color in the media. GLAAD has also released the Black History Month media resource kit in February and the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month media resource kit in May.
