Phyllis Nicklin was the Staff Tutor in Geography in the University of Birmingham's former Department of Extra Mural Studies in the 1950s and 60s and died in post in 1969. She left behind thousands of slides she had taken for her classes and these remain today a valuable part of the teaching collection of the Centre for Lifelong Learning, the latest in a long line of successors to Extra Mural Studies. For many years kept in the library at Winterbourne, where Phyllis worked, the collection is now based in the Orchard Learning Resources Centre on the University's Selly Oak campus, which is also the home of the Centre for Lifelong Learning.
For this project, a selection of about 450 slides from the collection have been digitised, providing a valuable repository documenting Birmingham's buildings, urban topography and street scenes during the 1950s and 60s. The digitised collection consists of images of the city centre and a selection of districts and suburbs.
The digitisation of these slides will allow the original photographic slides to be preserved, whilst the electronic format promotes wider access, facilitating learning and research opportunities. The resource will be relevant to those in the broad education sector, in particular to those seeking resources to support personal research on the local history of Birmingham, and those embarking on their own learning pathways. The content has been stored in a digital asset management system hosted at the Technological Innovation Centre at Millennium Point in Birmingham. This is a large database which can be searched.
