Cadette Girl Scout Troop 165 of St. John Vianney in Brookfield, Wisconsin
completed their Marian Medal Project with their Marian Expression in the
St. John Vianney Chapel on Monday, December 8, 2003, the feast of the Immaculate
Conception.
The process the troop adopted to receive this medal involved "Mary, the First
Disciple," a project book published by the National Federation for Catholic
Youth Ministry. They also used resources developed by the Archdiocese of
Milwaukee, who has built upon this program and has developed a Marian Medal Girl
Scout Retreat, as well as a moderator workshop for adults helping Girl Scouts
earn this particular medal.
The work leading up to their achievement of this medal drew the girls to
reflect on Mary and her role in salvation history, culture, prayer, and service.
They were moved to apply Mary's life actions and values to their own lives and
relationships; they each made a pledge "to give witness to [Jesus'] life and
messages" and "to honor Mary" (Mary the First Disciple, 44).
The achievement of the Marian Medal is a great accomplishment! The girls
received their medals at the mass that concluded the 2004 Archdiocesan
Boy Scout/Girl Scout Retreat held at St. William parish in Waukesha on Saturday,
January 17, 2004.
