Today's Dinamo continues the tradition of the famous clubc HAŠK, Građanski, Dinamo and Croatia. The oldest of those, HAŠK, was formed od November 6th 1903 as a students club, and Građanski was formed on 26th of April 1911 as a club for all social circles. After te WW2 when communists came to power, both famous Zagreb club were disbanded overnight, and the municipal club was formed. Like many more communist clubs in Eastern Europe, it was also called DINAMO. This happened on the 9th of June 1945.

All the best Građanski players immediately joined the newlyformed club: Urch, Woelfl, Kokotović, Lešnik, Cimermančić, Pleše, Antolković, Belošević, Jazbinšek, Reiss, and also young players Bučar, Ferković, Martinec, Kukec, Gereš, Čonč and Režek.

The Građanski manager Martin Bukovy continued to work in Dinamo, together with masseur Franjo Žlof, also a former Građanski player. Of the HAŠK players that transferred to Dinamo, the regulars in the first team were Ratko Kacian, Željko Čajkovski, Svetozar Peričić and Drago Lojen. Only Čajkovski stayed in Maksimir for a longer period, all of 11 years. Newly formed Dinamo also took Građanski's blue colours. From 1969 on, the clubs emblem was very similar to that of Građanski.

That continuity and tradition of former Croatian clubs like HAŠK whose players laid the foundations to the modern football, Građanski that was the most successful and most loved club in Zagreb and Dinamo, the symbol of Croatia during the hard communist years, were united under the name Croatia from 1993 until 2000. However, after 7 years, on February 14th 2000, the name Dinamo that never left the BBB banners officially returned to Maksimir.

During the 97 years, the club won 26 trophies: 17 championships, 11 national Cups, and in 1967, the Fairs Cup. Građanski was champion six times (1923, 1926, 1928, 1937, 1940 and 1943), HAŠK one in 1938, Croatia 5 times (1993, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999), and Dinamo 5 times (1948, 1954, 1958, 1982 and 2000). Croatia won the national Cup 4 times, Dinamo 7 times. Croatia took the double crown three times in a row, from 1996 to 1998. Hat trick by Maksimir Blues shall stand for a long time and will be surpassed only by them.
