Biography |
Previously a cyclist, Antonio Pinto switched to running in 1986 and
success quickly followed.
World class over 10,000m, he made the Olympic final in 1988, in
only his third year in the sport, captured the European title 10 years
later in 1998 and added the European Record in 1999.
But it is at the marathon that he has become best known. A modest
seventh place, 2:12:39, debut at Carpi in 1991 was only a hint at what
was to come: First at London in 1992; Second at Paris in 1994; First
at Berlin in 1994; Third at
London in 1995; Second at Tokyo in 1996; First at Berlin in 1996;
First at London in 1997; Third at London in 1998; Second at London
in 1999; First for a third time at London in 2000 and Third at London
in 2001.
With a best time for the marathon of 2:06:36, which is an European Record for the
distance, and six other sub 2:09:00 finishes,
Pinto is one of the fastest and most consistent marathoners of all
time.
Married with one child, born in June of 1999, Pinto still works
part-time on his family owned vineyards outside Porto.
