27/07/06 - Cricket: World's fastest bowler to play for Berkswell
Local Sport CraigyB writes "Shoaib Akhtar, widely lauded as the fastest bowler in world cricket is on his way to Balsall Common to play cricket for Berkswell Cricket Club.

The 30 year old Pakistani pace bowling legend is undergoing rehabilitation following a stress fracture to his ankle. The injury, which has kept him out of competitive cricket for approximately 5 to 6 months has meant Pakistan needed to devise an imaginative plan to get him fit enough to take part in the 4th and final Test for Pakistan against England at the Oval in August.

As a result Bob Woolmer, Pakistan's Head Coach and former architect of Warwickshire's 1994 treble winning side, decided Shoaib needed some preparation matches in English conditions. This led him him to approach his former club Warwickshire about managing Shoaib's rehabilitation which he wished to include a glimpse of club cricket in the Birmingham League.

When Warwickshire scouted round the league they discovered the most clubs already had their allowable 'quota' of overseas professionals. Once the vetting was complete, the presence of former Warwickshire star Dominic Ostler at Berkswell swung Woolmer's decision to authorise Akhtar's move to the relatively unknown club."

27/06/06 - Cricket: Ostler double century sinks Ombersley
Local Sport CraigyB writes "Having followed up on a report originally provided by Matt Nightingale we bring news of a stunning double century by Dominic Ostler for Berkswell at the weekend:

Berkswell v Redditch - Sat 24th June 2006

Berkswell 334 for 5 wickets (24pts) beat Ombersley 128 all out (3pts) by 206 runs

Following 2 consecutive defeats Berkswell dismissed any fears they were struggling to cope in Birmingham League 3 with an overwhelming 206 run win at home to a talented Ombersley side.

Having lost the toss, Berkswell skipper Dominic Ostler paved the way for victory with a gargantuan 202 not out. His double century - which he reached with a boundary from the last ball of the innings - contained 28 fours and seven sixes.

20/06/06 - Cricket: Berkswell tumble again
Local Sport CraigyB writes "Matt Nightingale reports on Berkswell's visit to Redditch, where things didn't go to plan:

Berkswell v Redditch Sat 10th June 2006

Redditch 231 for 9 wickets (24pts) beat Berkswell 214 all out (7pts) by 17 runs

Berkswell's second consecutive away trip brought a further defeat on a hot day in Redditch, but thanks to results elsewhere the B's found their 3rd place in the Birmingham League unaltered.

Berkswell lost the toss and on a slow dry pitch, chasing a total of 231 they capitulated to a 17 run defeat despite opener Mohammed Akhlaq's fine 106."
